A Talk by

Nicholas Tampio

Tariq Ramadan and His Critics

Wednesday, April 6, 2011, 6.30-8.30 pm.  Room 9206
Tariq Ramadan is one of the most prominent and important figures in contemporary global debates about Islam and the West. Yet his liberal critics charge him with undermining Western civilization, and his Islamist critics charge him with introducing innovation into the religion. In this talk, Prof. Tampio discusses Ramadan’s controversial call for a moratorium on stoning in the Islamic world. Against his liberal and Islamist adversaries, Tampio argues that it is a complex, and admirable, effort to cultivate a Muslim critical political sensibility and build a Muslim public sphere.

Nicholas Tampio
is Assistant Professor of Political Science at Fordham University. He earned his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University and has taught at the University of Virginia, George Mason University, and Hamilton College. He is revising a book manuscript, Advancing the Enlightenment: Kantian Courage in Contemporary Political Theory, and has a forthcoming article on "Constructing the Space of Testimony: Tariq Ramadan's Copernican Revolution" in Political Theory."
