December 19, 2018
Dear Friends of MEMEAC:
As 2018 comes to a close, we would like to highlight our activities this past year and the exciting plans that we have for the coming year. Over the summer, we launched a new website, showcasing the work of alumni, faculty, and students. Please have a look (https://memeac.gc.cuny.edu/) and update us on your accomplishments. Over twenty CUNY students and faculty presented at this year’s MESA meeting in San Antonio, Texas, at which MEMEAC Director Beth Baron completed her term as Past President of MESA. We also had a large contingent of MEMEAC alumni presenting their work and celebrating their publications.
During the fall, MEMEAC convened the monthly works-in-progress Dissections seminar, an interdisciplinary dissertation writing group, a faculty manuscript review, and showed a series of films. As we look towards the spring, MEMEAC will be hosting a book talk by Professor Elizabeth Macaulay-Lewis (Bayt Farhi and the Sephardic Palaces of Ottoman Damascus) and will continue our film series, Dissections, and dissertation writing group.
In this season of giving, we are asking the MEMEAC family to help fund our activities. This year we are continuing to collect for the Anny Bakalian Prize for the best thesis or capstone project by a MAMES student and would like to launch a special guest lecture. Please help us to honor the long-time associate director of MEMEAC/MAMES and give at the level you feel comfortable.
