Morocco’s Western Sahara in fiction, translation, and politics

A book talk and conversation with
Prof. Alex Elinson, translator and Associate Professor of Arabic, Hunter College, and
Mark Drury, Ph.D. Candidate, Anthropology, the Graduate Center

Wednesday March 15, 2017
6:30- 8:30 pm – Room 6304.24

A Beautiful White Cat Walks with Me, by Moroccan novelist Youssef Fadel, follows the paths of Hassan, a comic writer and performer in Marrakech, and his estranged father, the king’s jester. Fadel’s black humor resonates in Elinson’s fluid translation of this post-heroic double narrative of Morocco in the 1980s where power is concentrated in the hands of the very few and life is so unpredictable, cruel, and ridiculous, it is difficult to know when to laugh, and when to cry.

Join us as Dr. Elinson discusses and reads from his translation and talks with Mark Drury, an anthropologist specializing in the Western Sahara. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. Reception to follow.

Co-sponsored by the Global Studies Collective and the Critical Palestine Studies Association, chartered organizations of the CUNY Doctoral Students’ Council.
